Note cards info

Slide 1 : Peter Saville is an English art director and graphic designer. 
He was born October 9th in 1955 in Manchestor, England.
In the 1980's he designed many record sleeves and CD covers for Factory Records.

Slide 2 : From 1975 till 1978 he studied graphic design at Manchester Metropolitan University.  Saville got into the music scene when he met English record label owner Tony Wilson. 

Slide 3 : Shortly after meeting Wilson, Peter Saville made his first poster for Factory Records.  In 1979 Saville became a founding partner of Factory Records. On the right : Waste Painting #3, New Order Cover 2003. Peter Saville made a lot of record sleeves for the English rock band New Order which later formed into the band named Joy Division, after the suicide of the vocalist Ian Curtis. 

Slide 4 : The flower album cover was designed by Saville for New Order's Power, Corruption & Lies album. The other images are also Saville's work for New Order. He was inspired by fellow student Malcolm Garret who was designing for a punk group. His other inspiration was Jan Tschichold, who was a typographer, book designer, teacher and writer. 

Slide 5 : Joy Division's last album named Closer was released May 1980 shortly after Ian Curtis' suicide. This was controversial since it's a depiction of Christ's body entombed. It was confirmed that Saville's design was created at least 7 months before Curtis' death, so it had no relation to the sudden death. 

Slide 6 :  Saville didn't only design covers for New Order and Joy Division. This album cover was for the British band Happy Mondays. 

Slide 7 :  Saville is still designing covers today. He designed the orange cover for Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark Cd named History of Modern in June 2010.  Britpop band Suede's cover album called Electricity.  and another Joy Division cover.

Slide 8 : Manchester has a moto called Original Modern, it's a way of valuing what Manchester does and it's declaration for the future. This is their original slogan design. They wanted a different, new design and they asked Saville to design it.

Slide 9 : This is the new Original Modern design that Saville created.

Slide 10 : It is hung through out Manchester.

Slide 11 : Contemporary Waste Painting #9, The Crown Jewels by Peter Saville made in 2003. 

Slide 12 : Peter Saville is best known for this album cover for Joy Division's first album, Unknown Pleasures. He is an innovative designer who started his career in the late 70s with little experience but lots of inspiration to create this cover. 

Slide 13 and 14 : This cover was created in 1979 and January 25th 2012, last week, this cover was inspired to make these new Disney T-shirts, using the design and incorporating a Mickey Mouse head into it. 

Slide 15 : Some people have gotten tattoos of this cover and the design is also have been placed on the souls of sneakers.

Slide 16 : This design has traveled around and it's also on snowboards. A great example of how simple designs can be so versatile. 

Slide 17 : New Order's album cover for True Faith by Saville 

Slide 18 : On the right, "Ruined in a Day" single by New Order cover was made by Saville in 1993. On the left, 1987 Substance Poster designed by Peter Saville for Joy Division.

Slide 19, 20, 21, 22 :  Peter Saville and architect David Adjaye collaborated to design this London showroom for Danish fabric producers. This is a former Victorian factory. The staircase has colored glass. Saville said "Color, warmth and nature define the design concept and it's very much purpose-led rather than market-led." 

Slide 23 : This is one of his cover designs for Joy Division. In later years Saville worked in the field of fashion working for clients such as Stella McCartney and Christian Dior. He also became art director of the Virgin offshoot, DinDisc. He opened his own design agency Peter Saville Associates and then later in 1990 joined the design agency Pentagram. Saville received three silver Design and Art Direction awards. He stated "Art is an attempt to tell the truth about the world."
